| Description | Prime Minister's visit to Ottawa included private talks with Mr. Trudeau and also a formal meeting attended by senior Canadian Ministers in which they discussed East-West relations, including NATO and SALT, and also their respective efforts to meet the Nigerian authorities requests for assistance; the consequence for the Canadians trade with the UK on the UK joining the European Communities. The Prime Minister's visit to Washington to meet with President Nixon as well as attend a meeting of the National Security Council with the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, Michael Stewart at which East-West relations and the problems facing NATO were discussed. The Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, Michael Stewart had separate discussions with the US Secretary of State, Mr. William P. Rogers in which they discussed East-West relations. The principal subjects discussed by the Prime Minister and the President were as follows: - East-West Relations paying attention to issues affecting the Western Alliance. On NATO they agreed that a stronger and more cohesive Europe would be able to take some of the burden off the US. On the Soviet proposal for a European Security Conference they agreed that this was designed for a Soviet tactical advantage but that it should go ahead to relieve tension in Europe. Concerning SALT the Prime Minister thanked the President on keeping the allies informed in NATO of the talks. Prime Minister talked of HMG's application for entry in the European Communities and the political benefits, both to Europe and to the US. On Nigeria they agreed to do everything they could to assist the Federal Military Government. They discussed the Middle East and the Four power talks. On the Far East the US government to continue with their policy in Vietnam and will keep watch on China. Concerning the International Monetary Situation the Prime Minister was given an account of the State of the US economy. |
